Katharina “Kathy” was born on the family farm near Artas, South Dakota, on January 18, 1935. She was the last surviving child of eight children born to Calvin and Katharina (Orth) Ackerman.
Kathy spent her life working with her hands to create things enjoyed by people of all ages. If you have ever worn a pair of JCPenney blue jeans, fished with an Eagle Claw fishing pole, placed a knitted cap on your newborn or wrapped in a handmade Afghan, you might have enjoyed some of Kathy’s skilled handwork. Or, if you ever visited her home, you may have enjoyed some of the wonderful things that came from her kitchen: Schupfnudeln, chicken and dumplings, Knoephla soup, or even cherry cheesecake for special occasions.
Kathy was married to Marion Dahlin in 1956 and soon moved to Colorado, where together they raised three boys. The pair enjoyed gardening together, playing cards with friends, bowling, and serving at the VFW 6624 post in Evans, Colorado, where she was a 50-year member and served on the Auxiliary Board.
When Marion passed, Kathy continued to work serving others as the office manager at Weberg’s Furniture until her retirement, and then she moved home to South Dakota and the view of the lake.
She is survived by her sons: Dwight (Lillian) Dahlin of Rifle, Colorado, Ron (KaLee) Dahlin of Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Jeff Dahlin of Eureka, South Dakota; grandchildren Kristina (Brian) Barmann of Kansas City, Missouri, Lindsey (Joshua) Grandits of Rifle, Colorado, Bryson and Caitlin Dahlin of Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Elizabeth Ho-gland of Highland Hills, Colorado; four great-grandchildren, Harper, Jaxson, Jeriah and Nova; and many nieces and nephews.
Kathy was preceded in death by her husband, Marion; her parents; and siblings Alvin, Christina “Tina” Bauer, Gertrude, Eugene, Ruben, Esther Delzer, and Edwin.
The family wishes to thank her neighbors and the community for the rich time that she was able to spend with family and friends, the women that she sewed with and cooked with at the church, and all that were a part of her life after she returned home to the Eureka area.
